Abstract

The important function that first language (L1) plays in second language acquisition (SLA) is examined in this article. It looks at both the advantages and disadvantages of L1 for learning, emphasising ideas like cognitive transfer, interference, and fossilisation. This article seeks to educate teachers and students on maximising language learning experiences by examining theoretical frameworks and offering tactics for successfully utilising L1. Gaining insight into how L1 and L2 interact might improve teaching strategies and student performance. By understanding the nuances of this interaction, educators can tailor their approaches to better support learners, fostering an environment conducive to language development. The implications of these findings extend beyond the classroom, influencing curriculum design and pedagogical practices across diverse language learning contexts.
