Abstract

By outlining the idea of Standard American English (SAE) and its significance, the introduction prepares the reader for the discussion of American-based pronunciation standards. It draws attention to SAE's dual function as a representation of a language ideal and a formal standard. The paragraph also implies that regional dialects and variants continue to have a major influence on American English, even though SAE is widely used across the country.
