THE RESILIENCE OF THE MAIN HEROINE IN THE SHORT STORY “THE UNCONQUERED” BY W.S. MAUGHAM
Abstract
This article explores the powerful theme of resilience through the character of Annette, the courageous heroine in W. Somerset Maugham’s short story “The Unconquered”, occurred during the German invasion of France in World War II. Annette suffers from terrible personal trauma – rape and an unwanted pregnancy – but rejects to accept compassion or aid from her abuser. Her defiance becomes a symbol of spiritual strength and unwavering dignity. Rather than surrendering to despair or shame, she holds fast to her identity, becoming a striking image of what it means to remain emotionally and morally unconquered. Through text analysis of the short-story, this article reflects on how Annette’s story still speaks to the suffering of many women in contemporary war areas. Her strength gives voice to those who are too often silenced, reminding us that while war can break bodies and homes, it cannot defeat the human spirit.
