Coherence and cohesion constitute essential dimensions of effective academic writing, fundamentally shaping the clarity, interpretability, and rhetorical impact of a text. While cohesion operates at the surface level through grammatical and lexical linkages, coherence reflects the deeper semantic and logical relationships that unify discourse. This paper provides an in-depth examination of strategies for achieving coherence and cohesion in academic writing, with particular emphasis on structural organization, the strategic deployment of cohesive devices, thematic progression, and lexical consistency. Drawing on established frameworks in systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis, the study explores how writers construct meaningful and logically connected texts. Additionally, the paper addresses recurrent challenges encountered by second-language writers, including issues related to overgeneralization, redundancy, and weak logical sequencing. By integrating theoretical perspectives with practical applications, the study demonstrates that the development of coherence and cohesion is not merely a linguistic concern but also a cognitive and rhetorical process. The findings underscore that a conscious and systematic approach to textual organization significantly enhances academic writing proficiency and facilitates more effective communication of complex ideas.
